Maintaining Your Dryer
European dryers—especially high-end condenser models like the Miele units in our apartments—work differently than some residents might be used to.
Here are some simple guidelines to keep your dryer running smoothly. It will help your clothes dry effectively and avoid common maintenance issues that impact your comfort.
Check out this video walkthrough or read our summary below.
Why Dryer Maintenance Matters
If the dryer isn’t properly cleaned, you might notice:
Clothes taking longer to dry
The machine stopping mid-cycle
Annoying error messages
A build-up of lint or moisture
Overheating or reduced lifespan of the appliance
Most of these issues can be avoided with just a few quick cleaning steps after each use.
🔄 Step-by-Step: How to Clean Your Miele Dryer
✅ 1. Empty the Lint Filter – Every Load
Open the dryer door and locate the lint filter just inside.
Pop it open and remove all visible lint from both sections.
Be sure to clean all the little crevices and the fine mesh.
Put the filter back in place securely.
Tip: Don’t wait for the filter to look full. Even a thin layer of lint can reduce efficiency.
✅ 2. Check the Door Seal and Inside the Drum
Wipe the inside of the door and the rubber gasket if you see lint or debris.
Give the drum a quick glance to make sure no lint has built up inside.
✅ 3. Clean the Lower Filter (Fine Filter) – About Monthly, Depending on Use
Open the panel at the bottom front of the machine (you might need to push a latch).
You’ll see the fine filter inside. Pull it out carefully.
Open it up, clean out the lint, rinse with warm water, and let it dry.
Once dry, reinsert it carefully and close the panel.
Important: This filter catches what the main lint trap misses. A clogged fine filter is the #1 cause of error codes and poor drying performance.
✅ 4. Empty the Water Tank - Every Use
Many European dryers aren’t configured to drain automatically (the dryers can but spaces often aren’t plumbed to do so), so you’ll need to empty the water tank.
Open the compartment (usually upper left), slide out the tank, and pour the water down the sink.
Make sure the tank is seated correctly when you put it back.
⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid
Forgetting the lower filter: It’s hidden and easy to overlook, but critical.
Using the wrong products: No dryer sheets or fabric softeners inside the drum.
Forcing components back in: Be gentle with filters and compartments—if it doesn’t fit, don’t force it.
Waiting for problems before cleaning: A clean dryer is a happy dryer. Prevent issues before they start.
